Google Search rivals urge EU to revisit Android antitrust case

A group of search engines from around the world are banding together to demand European Union regulators address Google’s dominance in the online search market. They are also urging the EU to take a closer look at Google’s controversial auction process.

The news comes hot on the heels of the U.S. Department of Justice’s (DOJ) antitrust case, which formally launched last week. The suit alleges that Google violates anti-competition laws by crowding out rivals in the internet search and advertising markets.

DuckDuckGo (U.S.), Ecosia (Germany), Lilo and Qwant (France), and Seznam (Czech Republic) have penned an open letter to European Commission executive vice president Margrethe Vestager asking her to take a “renewed look” at how Google’s dominance in the search market is policed. As an initial step, the companies are calling for a trilateral meeting between themselves, the European Commission (EC), and Google to look at the issue of search engine competition in Europe and elsewhere. More specifically, Google’s smaller rivals want to establish a more “effective preference menu,” giving Android users an easier way to choose a default search engine when setting up their device for the first time.

The letter reads:

Dear Executive Vice President Vestager,

We are companies operating search engines that compete against Google. As you know, we are deeply dissatisfied with the so-called remedy created by Google to address the adverse effects of its anticompetitive conduct in the Android case. We understand that Google regularly updates you regarding its pay-to-play auction, but it appears that you may not be receiving complete or accurate information.

We are writing to request a trilateral meeting with your office, ourselves, and Google, with the goal of establishing an effective preference menu. Our respective designees could work in advance to create a tight agenda for this meeting to ensure it is productive and collaborative.

We are heartfelt supporters of the Commission’s ambition to remediate entrenched Google competition harms. We are asking to put these intentions into practice now, making full use of your existing tools.

Thank you in advance for your consideration.

Yours sincerely,
Ecosia – Germany; DuckDuckGo – United States; Lilo – France; Qwant – France; Seznam – Czech Republic.

The story so far

This latest development in Google’s spiraling antitrust woes can be traced back to 2018, when EU antitrust regulators hit the company with a record $5 billion fine (which is currently under appeal). The fine was levied over the way Google bundled its services on Android, giving handset manufacturers little choice in terms of which Google apps and services to preinstall.

In response to the ruling, Google overhauled its Android licensing model in Europe, electing to separate Google Search and Chrome from its other suite of apps and to offer different licenses for each “bundle” — which it would charge for. As part of these measures, Google introduced an auction process that would give alternative search engines a better chance to become the default provider on mobile devices sold in Europe. This would involve Google serving up a “choice screen” during a device’s initial setup process. The winning bidders would agree to pay Google every time a user chose them as the default search engine, after which the whole process would start all over again each quarter.

Rival search engines have long criticized this “pay-to-play” process, and some of them opted not to participate, on the grounds that the auction is “unethical and anti-competitive.” DuckDuckGo has argued that search engines that “squeeze money out of every last drop of people’s personal information” are better positioned to outbid privacy-focused or ethical search engines that don’t put profits first.

“An auction system pushes participants to bid up to their profitability per user — effectively transferring their margins to Google,” a DuckDuckGo spokesperson told VentureBeat.

“Ethical search engine” Ecosia, which uses its profits to plant trees, agrees the auction system is more likely to favor search engines that are friendly to Google’s bottom line.

“The incursion of financial cost, in return for the right for representation, cannot be fairly applied in the search engine market — it is only ever going to price out genuine alternatives in favor of Google ‘mini-me’s’ and affiliates,” Ecosia CMO Hannah Wickes told VentureBeat.

In design

Just last week, DuckDuckGo inked a separate open letter that asked Google why setting alternative search engines as a default on Android requires so many steps. This builds on a number of recent blog posts dedicated to search preference menu design and the broader auction process, with DuckDuckGo going so far as to design its own hypothetical search engine choice screen.

Above: DuckDuckGo created its own “template” for a default search engine menu on Android.

Rather than imposing an artificial limit of just four options, as is the case with Google’s current auction process, DuckDuckGo suggested a scrollable screen with additional options and an introduction explaining in simpler language how it all works.

“If the objective is to incentivize greater consumer choice in the search engine market, a properly designed and structured preference menu is a great way to go about it — but this should be done on the basis of criteria that are relevant for consumers, such as market share,” the spokesperson added.

Ecosia broadly agrees with this assertion and previously created its own mockup of an effective choice screen.

Above: Ecosia’s suggested search engine preference menu

Another concern is making the search engine choice screen more visible. As it stands, the screen only shows up when someone is setting up their Android device for the first time or they have factory-reset their phone. Ecosia wants all users to see the choice screen via proactive alerts.

“Going forward, it is essential that the replacement finds a way to reach all users, not just those who’ve purchased new devices,” Wickes said. “We will be pushing for the auction screen’s replacement to be shown on existing devices as well, either through push notifications or when new Android software is installed.”

The five search engines hope their collective voice will convince attention EU commissioners to look into the way Google has responded to previous complaints. In other words, Google’s antitrust woes may be about to get much worse.

Pokemon Go Halloween 2020 Event Now Live: Mega Gengar, Galarian Yamask, Shiny Spiritomb, And More

Niantic has already hosted a variety of October events in Pokemon Go over the last few weeks, but this month’s biggest event has now arrived. The game’s annual Halloween celebration is currently underway, and the studio has now revealed more details on what this year’s event will entail.

The Halloween event runs until 6 PM PT / 9 PM ET on November 3. Throughout that time, Ghost-type Pokemon will appear more often in the wild, Raid Battles, and eggs. A handful of new Pokemon will also make their debut during the event, including costumed version of Gengar and Sableye, as well as Galarian Yamask. Unlike the standard Yamask, which normally evolves into Cofagrigus, Galarain Yamask evolves into Runerigus, making this your first chance to get one of those in Pokemon Go.

On top of the increased Pokemon spawns, Niantic will roll out a new Halloween-themed Special Research questline during the event. Completing this will lead to an encounter with the Ghost/Dark Pokemon Spiritomb, and there’s a chance it could be Shiny. Players who completed the Mega Buddy Challenge Timed Research will also get to take part in event-exclusive Timed Research and earn Gengar Mega Energy, which will give you a chance to Mega Evolve the Ghost Pokemon.

As part of the Halloween festivities, Niantic is also holding a new kind of “Catch Mastery” event in Pokemon Go on October 25. This one will fittingly revolve around Ghost Pokemon. Throughout the event, the Ghost-type monster Drifloon will appear in the wild more often than usual, and you’ll be able to encounter other Ghost Pokemon by completing event-exclusive Timed Research and Field Research. There will also be a special Raid Day event on Halloween–October 31–that features Alolan Marowak from 11 AM to 5 PM local time.

Finally, the Legendary Dark-type Darkrai is returning to five-star Raids as part of the Halloween event, and it wouldn’t be a true Halloween celebration if there weren’t Candy bonuses. You’ll receive twice the usual amount of Candy for catching and transferring Pokemon throughout the event. You can read more on the Pokemon Go website.

In the meantime, Origin Forme Giratina is also currently appearing in Raid Battles until October 23, while October’s Field Research tasks will be available through the end of the month. Niantic already has a few activities planned for November as well. The studio is partnering with GrubHub to hold a “Special Weekend” event for GrubHub+ members on November 2.

Hearthstone Brings Back The Old Gods In "Madness At The Darkmoon Faire"

Hearthstone’s next expansion will bring back a fan-favorite foursome of larger-than-life cards, alongside a new keyword and a new game mode. The Madness at the Darkmoon Faire expansion is themed around a creepy carnival, and to match the occasion, the set will mark the return of the Old Gods–albeit with different effects than we saw in the Whispers of the Old Gods expansion.

As before, the Old Gods are powerful 10-Mana Legendary minions with game-changing effects that encourage you to build a deck around their central mechanics. C’Thun, N’Zoth, Yogg-Saron, and Y’Shaarj are all neutral minions, so you’ll be able to fit them into any type of deck. New Old God Artifact cards will also bring back the flavor of the original Old Gods.

A new Corrupt mechanic is coming into play in the Darkmoon Faire as well. Cards with the new keyword get a powerful upgrade if you play a higher-cost card while they’re in your hand.

The new expansion is coming alongside a new game mode, called Duels. The new mode uses the unique hero powers and powerful treasures of the popular Dungeon Run single-player mode and mixes in some standard deck-building and Arena-like rewards. Preordering the new expansion will get you early access to the Duels mode, starting today. If you don’t preorder, you can play when it opens for everyone upon the launch of Darkmoon Faire. Finally, both Darkmoon Faire and Duels are coming alongside a revamped rewards system that uses a battle pass-like structure.

Darkmoon Faire will release on November 17. You can preorder a standard bundle that includes 45 Darkmoon Faire packs, one random Legendary card, a N’Zoth cardback, and Duels early access, for $40. A Mega Bundle is also available for $80, offering 80 packs, 5 golden packs, one random golden Legendary, and N’Zoth as a new Warlock hero portrait.

For more, check out our in-depth look at all the Hearthstone updates coming in the next few weeks, and view our gallery of all the Darkmoon Faire cards we’ve seen so far.

Fortnite Ghost Rider Skin Confirmed In New Leak

Fortnite is getting a Ghost Rider skin soon, according to data miners. Ghost Rider-related achievements, among other pieces of evidence, have been found within the game’s files. Fortnite leaker Hypex tweeted about a new Ghost Rider achievement where players have to drive a vehicle as Ghost Rider.

Fortnite’s Season 4 is full of Marvel heroes. Iron Man, Wolverine, Thor, She-Hulk, Mystique, Storm, Groot, and Dr. Doom are available as part of the battle pass. Several of these heroes can also be found roaming the map during games, and you can kill them to gain their powers. Daredevil is currently in the item shop after being released as part of a special Marvel Knockout tournament.

Ghost Rider, played by Nicolas Cage on the silver screen, could be added in a similar tournament. Epic said that there would be three more tournaments, including a grand finale on November 22, that would feature other heroes. We don’t know who those heroes will be, though. We do know that data miners have also find evidence that Venom, the fan-favorite villain from Spider-Man, will also be coming to Fortnite.

Fortnite’s annual Halloween event, Fortnitemares, kicked off today with three separate challenges. Players can earn upwards of 80,000 experience by flying on a witch’s broom and dying. Those points will help them burn through Season 4’s extra long grind. More challenges will come as Halloween grows closer.

The Best Moments From AOC's Among Us Stream

When congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez first announced her interest in streaming Among Us “to get out the vote,” she was met with a barrage of popular livestreamers and other influencers eager to play alongside her. When that stream finally went live on the evening of October 20, more than 430,000 viewers tuned in on Twitch to watch. The stream ran for 3.5 hours and featured an all-star lineup of guests, including streamers Hasan “Hasanabi” Piker, Imane “Pokimane” Anys, Harris “Hbomberguy” Brewis, Ali “Myth” Kabbani, Seán “Jacksepticeye” McLoughlin, Charles “Cr1TiKaL” White, Jeremy “Disguised Toast” Wang, Benjamin “DrLupo” Lupo, and fellow congresswoman Ilhan Omar of Minnesota.

If you weren’t able to tune in, here were some of the best moments from the AOC stream, as documented by amused viewers on social media.

AOC killing Pokimane

“I can’t kill Poki, she’s so nice. I can’t do that—okay, I think I have to do it.” – AOC

AOC ruthlessly taking out Pokimane in the security room after a brief—very brief—moment of hesitation, and then immediately getting caught by Myth.

“It was an honor,” Poki declared, after letting out a shocked scream. “It was an honor!”

AOC killing Mxmtoon

“I’m gonna pass away.” – Mxmtoon

AOC got quite a few kills as the impostor and people’s reactions were priceless every time. Mxmtoon, after getting put down in electrical, seemed to have trouble processing the moment:

“Is it weird we’re calling you AOC?”

“No, no, you guys can call me AOC. Mike Pence can’t call me AOC.” – AOC

While trying to adjust audio levels, Hasanabi referred to the congresswoman as “AOC,” then stopped himself to ask if that nickname was appropriate. AOC assured her crewmates it was—for them, at least.

That rig Ilhan Omar was playing on

“When you’re winning.” – Ilhan Omar

About an hour into the stream, Ilhan Omar’s deputy comms director Isi Baehr-Breen posted a photo of the Minnesota congresswoman streaming from his monster gaming rig. Shortly after, Omar posted the PC’s specs, which sent Twitter into a frenzy.

Disguised Toast “marinating” AOC…

“I would not marinate a congresswoman.” – Disguised Toast

“Marinating” is an impostor strategy in Among Us where the impostor manufactures a false sense of security among crewmates by sticking near another player without attacking them, tricking that player into defending them if they’re ever called into question. At one point, AOC started to defend Disguised Toast, but knew better than to do so without caveats.

It turns out she was right the whole time, but as AOC said, “That’s politics, right?”

…then AOC getting revenge

“It’s like a Rachel Ray, like Wolfgang Puck, sous vide marinating the whole time.” – AOC

If you didn’t get a chance to tune in live, you can watch the full VOD of AOC’s Among Us stream on her Twitch channel.

Fortnite Players Are Tired Of Season 4's Extra-Long Grind

Fortnite’s Season 4 is much meatier than previous seasons. The Marvel-character-filled battle pass has 220 tiers with special rewards that players are trying to unlock by grinding hours of the battle royale.

“I just hit 145 and may call it quits at 180,” said Redditor Jester0745. “It’s getting tiresome playing strictly to get punches done.”

New battle pass pages with additional rewards unlock once players reach tier 100. All the Marvel skins have additional styles, including silver, gold, and rainbow variants, that unlock every five levels. This season is ending on (or around) November 22 so players need to level up two and a half times per day to reach the top. That’s not an easy task, even as Epic Games extended this season beyond the usual ten weeks.

Players have searched Fortnite far and wide to find additional ways to earn experience. They complete punch cards (additional challenges that award 15,000 points a pop), hidden coins that grant experience, and even secret challenges that pop up a handful of times per season. It’s still difficult to reach the highest level without playing a ton or spending $80 to pay to level up to tier 100.

There are special bundles that players can buy in the item shop that automatically level them up. Many players have opted to go with that route rather than grind a dozen games every day. “If you start at 1 it’s a grind and a half, if you start at 25 it’s a grind, if you start at 100 it’s like 3/4 of a grind,” said Redditor BakedAndBreaded. “I’m British though so we measure grinds in metric units.”

Some players have tried to find less strenuous ways to earn experience. One method is to let their character idle in Fortnite’s Creative mode for hours on end. You earn experience every 15 minutes by just playing Creative, so players rack up points over time. All they have to do is reset their game every hour or so.

These extra skins that come at the end of the battle pass, like the level costumes that unlock at tier 100 in previous battle passes, are bragging rights for a lot of players. Reaching the end of the battle pass is the most important achievement they can earn each season. The grind to get there is just more difficult now than before.
